Greencore Homes shows what’s possible. Now government needs to catch up.

Yesterday Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing Angela Rayner visited Greencore Homes – a friend of the APPG for Hemp Carbon Capture and Rural Development, and a business building zero-carbon homes from materials including hemp.

It’s fantastic to see serious attention finally being paid to SME builders and the role they can play in reshaping housing policy, from planning reform to unlocking stalled sites. And there’s no better host than Greencore co founder, Ian Pritchett to demonstrate what sustainable innovation really looks like in practice.

But let’s be clear: innovation won’t scale without infrastructure.

If we want to mainstream climate-positive homes made from hemp and other bio-based materials, we need more than encouragement. We need a national hemp carbon trading platform, insurance products that guarantee delivery, and reform of the Proceeds of Crime Act so UK banks can support this industry without fear.

That’s how we deliver jobs, tax revenue, and cost parity with traditional construction. That’s how we unlock the full potential of this sector.

So while it’s great to see the government listening…

...let’s get serious about what comes next.
